Dogwood, Red Osier

  • (Cornus sericea) Known for red twigs in winter, this fast-growing shrub also has white flowers, smooth dark green leaves, bitter, but not poisonous berries and reddish purple fall colors. With a crown spread of up to 15 feet, it's a good informal border planting or windbreak choice. It prefers full sun to partial shade and wet loam soil. Robins, waxwings, rabbits and deer like this shrub for both food and cover. No real pest problems, other than minor issues with aphids.
