Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus Virginiana)
Serving as a wildlife magnet, this cedar is often used in windbreaks and landscapes. Once started, it is drought tolerant, prefers full sun and does best in wet, loam to sand soil. It has cones and juniper “berries” that mature in about a year. Birds and mammals like this coniferous shrub for both food and cover. It is not advised to plant them near apple trees due to cedar-apple rust.
