• (Tilia americana) Commonly referred to as American Linden, this fast-growing tree is desirable for landscapes because of its size, yellow fall colors and wide-spreading root system. It prefers full sun but tolerates shade and grows best in fertile, well-drained loam/clay soils. The basswood provides cover for birds and mammals. In fact, old hollow trees often make good wildlife dens. Generally it has no serious pest problems.
